    - Camping and hiking -

Saurbær is a community at the North – East end of Breiðafjörður. The landscape is beautiful the district lies in semicircle of mountains, in a relatively flat, grassy and marshy valley. . Farming is the main occupation with the service centre at Skriðuland. A campsite is at Tjarnarlundur and salmon and trout permissions can be bought at Fóðuriðjan. Hikers, campers and strollers will find plenty to keep themselves busy at Saurbær. The shore with its sandy beaches, rock formations and bird life, mountains small and large offer a challenge. Communications are good and it is only two to three hour’s drive from Reykjavík.

There is a museum on Ólafsdalur farm, under renovation. The first farming school in the country was established at Ólafsdalur in the latter part of the 19th century under the able direction of Torfi Halldórsson an important innovator of agricultural reform and the pioneer of the modern agricultural techniques which are now employed throughout the country.

The roads to the Westfjords run through the community.
