At crossroads in the highland north of Vatnajökull glazier is the farm Grímsstaðir just 4 km off highway no 1 on road 864 to Dettifoss. Herðubreið, the queen of Icelandic mountains proudly overlooks her reign. Grímsstaðir lie in the driest area of Iceland, the summer days can get remarkably warm and the winter frost gets cruel. Sleeping bag accommodation with cooking facilities is in the old and comfortable farmhouse „Afahúsi” or “Grandfathers House“. In the main house accommodation is available in made up beds in two double rooms. The optional breakfast with freshly baked homemade bread and other local specialties is served in the hosts’ kitchen. A small camping ground is in a grassy cove by a mountain stream.
