At crossroads in the highland north of Vatnajökull glazier is the farm Grímsstaðir just 4 km off highway no 1 on road 864 to Dettifoss. Peacefulness is almost overwhelming and the majestic view across the vast open spaces of the Icelandic highlands is breathtaking. Herðubreið, the queen of Icelandic mountains proudly overlooks her reign. Grímsstaðir lie in the driest area of Iceland, the summer days can get remarkably warm and the winter frost gets cruel. The magic of four seasons and the closeness of nature’s forces are palatable; translucent light of the spring, clam summer days and light nights, vivid colors of the autumn and not to forget the white and mysterious winter with short days and extended twilight. Many Icelandic poets and writers have sought inspiration in the magic of the place and the name itself „Grímsstaðir á Fjöllum“ holds a special place in Icelanders’ hearts.
Farmers in Grímsstaðir have for centuries provided food and lodging for the weary traveler, the mail carriers stayed overnight with their horses on the long journey from the east to north. Icelandic hospitality marked by the attitude that „where there is room in the heart there is room in the house“ is a trademark of the farm. Today’s traveler can sample a piece of this old tradition. Grímsstaðir is the perfect place to stay a couple of nights, enjoy the peace and quiet and make day excursions.
